The new Railway system will be designed in order to safely & efficiently transport passengers (at 300 km/h) and freights (at 120 km/h) and, together with the new Highway system, will handle the expected traffic demand and the relevant operations of the Grand Faw Port, whose max. traffic capacity is the following (as per original Master Plan):
Stages Plan

SECOND STAGE
7.5 mln TEU/year and 33 Mln Bulk/year (within 2038)
FUTURE EXPANSION
Step 1: 10.5 TEU/year and 33 Mln Bulk/year (beyond 2038)
FUTURE EXPANSION
Step 2: 25.0 TEU/year and 33 Mln Bulk/year (beyond 2038)

The new multimodal corridor (Railway & Highway Systems) will be designed according to the latest International Codes & Standards, best engineering practices and modern technologies. The new Highway system will be designed with three lanes for each direction plus an emergency lane. It should be noted that the new Railway corridor is serving most of the Iraqi cities from South to North. On the other hand, the new Highway corridor will run along the same Railway alignment in the Northern Regions (from Kerbala upto the Turkish border), whilst between Faw upto Kerbala it will be a brand-new alignment running along the Western desertic area.
